Adventures in Cloth

Today we begin our journey into the use of cloth diapers.  After over a year of disposables we’re taking the leap.  When I first started reading about the use of cloth I just thought it sounded neat, they were super cute and had cute names.  But I didn’t think ‘cuteness’ would sell Adam on letting me put baby poop in our washing machine.  As I started reading more I discovered more and more reasons to give cloth a try…and reasons more important the ‘cute.’

- They are better for Addie.  Disposables contain a chemical (albeit in small amounts) called Dioxin.  Dioxin is listed by the EPA as the most toxic of cancer related chemicals.  They also contain other chemicals that are known to cause hormone problems in humans and animals and another chemical that was actually banned from use in tampons because of its link with toxic shock syndrome.

- They are better for the world.  Since we still haven’t figured out how we’re going to live on Mars I figure we should keep the planet we have in good shape.  We’re still not sure how long it takes “disposable” diapers to biodegrade.   Online I’ve seen figures ranging from 250-500 years!  Even best case that is a LONG time.  I hate to think that the diapers that we wore as a children will be in the landfill when my great-great-great-great grandchildren are in diapers.  Not to mention all of the trees and plastics that go into making them.

- In the long run they are cheaper.  While the start up costs are more significant than disposables you make up for it in the end.  Not only will we save money just using them with Addie we can save them for any future children.

- They feel so much nicer and personally, if I had to wear a diaper, I would rather wear a nice soft cotton than paper and plastic.

- They are so freakin’ cute!  And they have cute names like Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heiney’s.

For our trial run I ordered one of a few different types to see what works best for us.  These aren’t the diapers from when we were kids.  While they do sell diapers that need to be folded there are many other options out there.  Most have velcro or snaps so they go on just like disposables.  You’ll see pictures of her diapers in her album as we get them on her.

Addie o’clock

It appears that the Addie o’clock is broken.

She used to get up sometime between 7:30 and 7:40.  Then it was 7:15, then 7, then 6:30…noticing a pattern?  Now we’re somewhere between 5:40 and 6:15.  Ugh.  I didn’t mind getting up that early to go to work but now I feel like I should be able to sleep a little bit later since we don’t need to be anywhere, but no.

The good news is that the last time she did this (couple months ago) she suddenly reset herself back to getting up at 8am and then slowly started getting up earlier.  Hopefully she resets soon.

Drought

You would think that given that we’re in the middle of a drought I could stay out of the rain.

Over the weekend Adam, Addie and myself were out walking and started raining…we were soaked by the time we got home.  Today I was out walking/running with Addie and we were 3/4 of the way around our loop when I saw a sheet of rain coming our way.  We were drenched!

I’ve discovered that people in our neighborhood are really nice and/or melt in the rain.  When the three of us were out one of our neighbors stopped and asked us if we wanted an umbrella.  Today a woman poked her head out of her door and asked if we wanted to come inside and wait out the rain, another woman pulled over with a young child in the car and asked if we wanted a ride and that she had another carseat, and the same guy that asked if we wanted an umbrella this weekend laughed and said “not again!”  My thoughts exactly!!

Some People

Today after swimming lessons we were in the locker room getting dressed. Addie was dressed and running around like she does while I was trying to get ready without having to run out the door half naked after her. An older woman saw her and asked if she was boy or a girl! Now, I am the first to admit that I don’t always dress her super girly and some days she could go either way (jeans and a yellow t-shirt, etc). But this is what she was wearing…

Come on!!! The only way I could possibly have made it more obvious is if she had a big pink bow in her hair!

Adam suggested that maybe when you get old you go black and white!  lol

They’re Still Alive

The pineapples that is. A couple days after my first post I went ahead and started a second pineapple just in case the first one didn’t survive. And if they both survive we’ll have two pineapples to eat.

So far they are both doing okay. I wasn’t so sure for a few days though. A lot of the leaves turned brown and got really dried up so I thought the plants were goners. But I kept changing their water and sure enough little roots are starting to grow. I eventually pulled off the worst of the dried leaves because they seemed sad and they look much better (although smaller) now. Hopefully another week or two in the water will give me good enough roots to plant them. Pineapple007 is the roots of the oldest and 008 is the roots (you can barely see them) of the newest.

I also bought some pots for them the other day so once they have roots I’m ready to go. So far so good.
