Today we begin our journey into the use of cloth diapers. After over a year of disposables we’re taking the leap. When I first started reading about the use of cloth I just thought it sounded neat, they were super cute and had cute names. But I didn’t think ‘cuteness’ would sell Adam on letting me put baby poop in our washing machine. As I started reading more I discovered more and more reasons to give cloth a try…and reasons more important the ‘cute.’
- They are better for Addie. Disposables contain a chemical (albeit in small amounts) called Dioxin. Dioxin is listed by the EPA as the most toxic of cancer related chemicals. They also contain other chemicals that are known to cause hormone problems in humans and animals and another chemical that was actually banned from use in tampons because of its link with toxic shock syndrome.
- They are better for the world. Since we still haven’t figured out how we’re going to live on Mars I figure we should keep the planet we have in good shape. We’re still not sure how long it takes “disposable” diapers to biodegrade.  Online I’ve seen figures ranging from 250-500 years! Even best case that is a LONG time. I hate to think that the diapers that we wore as a children will be in the landfill when my great-great-great-great grandchildren are in diapers. Not to mention all of the trees and plastics that go into making them.
- In the long run they are cheaper. While the start up costs are more significant than disposables you make up for it in the end. Not only will we save money just using them with Addie we can save them for any future children.
- They feel so much nicer and personally, if I had to wear a diaper, I would rather wear a nice soft cotton than paper and plastic.
- They are so freakin’ cute! And they have cute names like Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heiney’s.
For our trial run I ordered one of a few different types to see what works best for us. These aren’t the diapers from when we were kids. While they do sell diapers that need to be folded there are many other options out there. Most have velcro or snaps so they go on just like disposables. You’ll see pictures of her diapers in her album as we get them on her.
