Piper Update

Piper had her Voiding Cystourethrogram and renal ultrasound today.  She was not a happy camper.

We were supposed to arrive at the hospital for pre-registration at 11:30.  Registration was quick and painless (although the woman was incredibly unfriendly) so I thought we were off to a good start.  From registration we went on to another waiting room.  Where we sat.  And sat.  And sat some more.  Until 12:55 we sat.  Addie did AMAZING!  I brought along the iPod with a Veggie Tales movie and a little bowl of snacks.  Piper also did good just crawling around the waiting room.  Everyone thought they were both adorable!

Eventually we were called back for the ultrasound.  She wasn’t a huge fan of being forced to lay down but this part was the easy part and relatively quick.  They did a quick look at both kidneys and bladder and then we were done.  Back to the waiting room.

Shortly after we were sent to a different waiting room to wait for the VCUG.  Fortunately this was a short wait because a woman in this waiting room was watching a not very child friendly movie on BET.  At that point we were sent into the x-ray room and they asked “Do you have someone else with you?  Because she can’t be in the room.”  Um…no.  So they went to found someone that could sit with Addie during the x-rays.  I didn’t realize they were doing x-rays.  I was under the impression it was ultrasound otherwise I would have made arrangements for her.  But she had her movie so she was all set.

Once we got Addie settled I had to change Piper into a little baby hospital gown (too cute and totally pointless).  We got her laid down and they inserted the catheter and collected some urine.  Her doctor had written a prescription to send some urine to the lab to double check to make sure the infection was gone.  Once that was done we had to wait for the doctor before they inject the contrast material into the bladder.  And we waited.  And waited.  And waited.  It probably didn’t take THAT long but Piper was laying on the table being held down by myself and a nurse screaming her little heart out.  It felt like forever.  The ultrasound tech even yelled out to the other room to see if he was coming.  Seriously?  Could this not have been planned better?  Did nobody think she might not be real happy about this whole situation and that they should be in a position to keep the ball rolling?  Once he finally came in the test went quickly.  They injected the material and then had to wait for her to pee which our doctor said could take between 5 and 20 minutes at this age.  She was on top of things though and it took less than 2 minutes.  :)   And we were done.  After they let me pick her up she stopped crying almost immediately and scowled at the nurses.

Before we left the ultrasound tech handed me the vial of urine “to drop off at your doctors.”  After 2 1/2 hours there I didn’t have it in me to drive the 2 blocks to the doctors office, pull them both out of the car, put them both back in the car, etc.  Everyone was just exhausted.  In fact Piper was asleep before we pulled out of the parking lot.

This evening our doctor called to tell us the results were all normal and she isn’t at high risk bladder or kidney infections.  Then he asked if they sent a sample to the lab and I told him they had sent it with me.  He was puzzled by why they didn’t just send it to the lab since if I had dropped it off at their office they would have sent it back to the lab at the hospital.  He said that he isn’t concerned with her still having an infection with no symptoms after being off antibiotics for a week and a half so we tossed the sample.

Long.  Long.  Long day.  But we got good news!

Naps: A Blessing and a Curse

Yesterday Addie took one of her once a month naps.  I was so excited when I realized she must be sleeping since she hadn’t come out of her room to pee in the last 10 minutes.  She really desperately needed a nap.  Not only was she being grumpy she was just being plain mean.

My excitement faded near bedtime and she proclaimed “I’M NOT TIRED!”  And the excitement continued to fade an hour after bedtime when she wandered downstairs fully dressed and said “But I wonder why it is still dark out?”  Because it is bedtime!  And it continued to fade every time she was brought back to her room between 8:30 and 10:15ish when she finally fell asleep.  Phew!

Good thing she’ll sleep in right?  Yah, right.  6:30 this morning Addie was up.  8 hours of sleep is not enough for Addie.  But we made it through the day and at bedtime she proclaimed “I’M NOT TIRED!”  Too bad.

Poor Piper

Last Tuesday night (6/29) Piper woke up during the night and felt a little warm but not too terrible.  Since Adam was out of town I snuggled her into bed with me and she slept well nursing on and off throughout the night.  By the next morning she was still just slightly warm and kind of crabby but I figured it was the three teeth that are trying to push their way through her gums so we went ahead and went to our playgroup. By the time we got home she felt even warmer so I took her temp and it was 101.  A bit higher than I would expect with teeth and she was seeming more and more miserable.  We kept trucking through our day as usual and by bedtime her fever was up to 103.5.  Nope, not teeth.

Our doctor typically likes to wait 3-4 days before coming in with just a fever with no other symptoms when it is being managed successfully with Tylenol.  All day Thursday her fever we did Tylenol during the day and ibuprofen at night (since it lasts longer) and her temp would come down to 101ish and then shoot right back up to 103s as soon as it wore off.  Friday morning she was doing better (ie not roasting) and we even went to the museum for the morning before picking Adam up from the airport.  Unfortunately by Saturday morning she was a miserable lump again wanting to do nothing but sleep on someone.  Saturday night she woke up at about 1:45, puked on me twice and had a temp of 104.  So she and I sat downstairs with a cold washcloth for a couple hours until her temp dropped a bit.  By morning she had NO fever at all.  She took her nap at the normal time and when she woke up at 10 she was burning up again.  Oy!

Hoping our pediatrician was open on the 4th I called to see if we could get her in Sunday.  They were!  So they got her in at 10:45.  Ears were good, throat was a bit pink they thought from the fever but not infected, and everything else checked out good.  At that point the doctor wanted to check for a bladder infection.  Unfortunately “go pee in a cup” doesn’t really work on a 9 month old so they had to do a catheter.  Poor thing!  But, sure enough, she has a bladder infection.  We got a prescription for amoxicillin and within 24 hours her fever was pretty much gone and she seems to be feeling much better.  Still clingy but a lot less lumpish.
